HS2 replaced with Dacia Sandero train

The HS2 rail link between London and Birmingham is set to be completely scrapped and replaced with a train made up of Dacia Sanderos, according to the government. This decision is expected to significantly reduce the project's cost, potentially freeing up funds for the Phase 2 leg to Manchester. Although the Sandero train won't be able to reach the high speeds initially promised by HS2, it will have exclusive access to the hard shoulder on the M1 and M6, allowing passengers to mock drivers stuck in traffic.

The hope is that this alternative solution will make commuters and voters forget about the originally promised 52-minute journey times between the two cities. A government insider praised the decision, stating that it solves all their problems. The Sandero train will be more cost-effective, as it won't require extensive construction or maintenance like a traditional train. However, there won't be any food or drinks service on board, but considering the cost of the ticket, passengers wouldn't be able to afford it anyway.

When asked about the Phase 2 leg to Manchester, the insider expressed uncertainty due to the need to address potholes in the north. They mentioned that spare wheels for a regular Sandero are quite expensive, so they are currently calculating the most cost-effective option.
