IMI supports government investigation on electric vehicles

The IMI has called on the government to consider various factors, including incentives, infrastructure, availability, and end-of-life disposal, following the announcement of a new inquiry into the electric vehicle (EV) experience.

The inquiry aims to gather feedback from industry and customers regarding the real-life challenges associated with EVs. This feedback will be crucial as the government evaluates the feasibility of its 2030 ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel vehicles.

Hayley Pells, the policy and public affairs lead at the IMI, expressed full support for the UK government's ambition to transition to zero-emission vehicles. She emphasized the significance of the new inquiry in understanding the barriers, costs, and benefits of transitioning by the proposed phase-out dates of 2030 and 2035.

Pells highlighted the importance of involving both the automotive sector and motorists in the inquiry, commending the Environment and Climate Change Committee, led by Baroness Parminter, for recognizing this. The IMI, with its unique insights across the automotive sector, is committed to contributing to the inquiry and collaborating with the government, its members, and the wider industry to ensure a seamless transition to electric vehicles.

Regarding the government's approach, Pells stressed the need to incentivize a robust EV market in the UK. While the phase-out dates may be ambitious, she believes they are achievable through collective efforts, industry partnerships, and clear policy guidelines. Pells advocated for the development of a clear roadmap with specific dates and timelines to assist all stakeholders in preparing for the transition.

Pells also urged the government to address the issue of battery disposal and recycling. She emphasized that the entire lifecycle of EVs must be taken into account when assessing their sustainability.
