IMI supports government investigation on electric vehicles
【Summary】The IMI supports the government's inquiry into electric vehicles (EVs), calling for consideration of incentives, infrastructure, availability, and end-of-life disposal. The inquiry seeks feedback on real-life challenges with EVs as the government evaluates its 2030 ban on new petrol and diesel vehicles. The IMI emphasizes the importance of input from the automotive sector and urges the development of a clear roadmap for the transition.
The Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) has called on the government to consider various factors when assessing the electric vehicle (EV) experience. This comes after the government announced a new inquiry into the viability of its 2030 ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel vehicles. The inquiry aims to gather industry and customer feedback on the real-life challenges faced with EVs.
Hayley Pells, policy and public affairs lead at the IMI, expressed full support for the government's ambition to transition to zero-emission vehicles. She emphasized the importance of understanding the barriers, costs, and benefits associated with the 2030 and 2035 phase-out dates. The IMI is eager to contribute to the inquiry and work alongside the government, its members, and the wider industry to achieve a seamless transition to electric vehicles.
Pells highlighted the need for the government to incentivize the UK EV market, stating that the phase-out dates are aggressive but achievable with a collective effort, industry partnerships, and clear policy. She stressed the importance of developing a clear roadmap with key dates and timelines to help stakeholders prepare for the transition.
In addition, Pells urged the government to address the issue of battery disposal and recycling. She emphasized the need to consider the entire lifecycle of EVs when assessing their sustainability.
