Jaguar's electric sedan signals a new chapter

Jaguar is set to embark on its all-electric future with a £100,000 four-door GT, and our exclusive image gives us a glimpse of what to expect. The rear image reveals a departure from the brand's current lineup, with a wide stance, distinct angles, and straight lines. The prominent diffuser and razor-thin tail-lights add to the overall effect. Interestingly, there is no Jaguar badging, as the new JLR boss Adrian Mardell explained in an interview. He expressed a clear desire to take Jaguar in a new direction with a fresh visual identity that captures the emotion of the brand.

Under the leadership of JLR's Chief Creative Officer, Gerry McGovern, a project called Renaissance was initiated. This project tasked three teams within JLR's design studio to produce a family of three distinct types of vehicles. The result was 18 clay-model proposals in just three months. The image we see here is the first interpretation of the new design language, which was unanimously chosen by everyone involved and described by Mardell as "jaw-dropping."

Prototypes of the new GT are expected to hit the road for testing by the end of the year. An official unveiling is planned for April or May 2024, with sales scheduled for 2025. This not only gives us a glimpse of the GT but also hints at what's in store for the two new crossovers that will complete the lineup. Mardell emphasizes the importance of an association and a family look among the vehicles.

Jaguar is undergoing a complete reboot as part of JLR's Reimagine strategy. There are no plans for replacements of the existing models. Instead, Jaguar will be positioned alongside Range Rover, Defender, and Discovery as one of JLR's four brand pillars. The GT, along with the two crossovers, will be manufactured at the Solihull plant, which will also produce the all-electric Range Rover. The GT is expected to be the most powerful Jaguar production car ever made, surpassing the brand's existing EV, the I-Pace, in terms of range and charging capacity.

While Jaguar has not released specific motor outputs or performance figures, they claim that the new GT will have a range of up to 700km (435 miles) and will be capable of adding approximately 200 miles of range in just 15 minutes of rapid charging.
