Versatile Pickup Truck Set for Release by Year's End

The Toyota Rangga Concept has made its debut at the Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS). This multi-purpose pick-up truck is a slightly modified version of the IMV 0 concept, which was presented in Thailand last December.

The concept aims to provide buyers with a platform that can be customized according to their needs. Toyota showcased its own variants of the Rangga at GIIAS 2023, including the Mobile Cafe, Ambulance, Mobile Service Station for EVs, and Pace Car.

To encourage public participation and generate new variants, Toyota Astra Motor (TAM) organized a contest where participants could create digital renderings of the vehicle based on three different themes: business, lifestyle, and public service. The contest started with a template featuring the Rangga with a rear truck bed.

The contest website features numerous creative ideas, such as an ice cream truck, a fire-fighting vehicle, a camper, an ambulance, a mobile cafe, and many pace trucks. Nine winners of the contest will have their renderings brought to life as mockups during the Rangga's official launch, in addition to receiving monetary prizes.

The Rangga is expected to enter series production and go on sale in late 2023 or early 2024. Reports suggest that Thailand will be the initial rollout location, followed by Indonesia and other markets. Anton Jimmi Suwandy, TAM's marketing director, stated that the production Rangga would be priced below the Hilux, ranging from 200 million to 300 million rupiah.

According to a report by Top Gear PH, the Rangga will also be sold in the Philippines. Initially, it will be offered with turbodiesel and petrol engines, and hybrid and fully electric options will be added in the future. The vehicle is said to come in cab and chassis models, but Toyota has not yet released any official technical details.

The name 'Rangga' is inspired by the Javanese word 'ronggo,' which symbolizes strength and toughness. It was previously used for a variant of the Kijang sold in the 1990s in Indonesia. The Kijang, known as the Tamaraw in the Philippines, has transformed from being mainly multi-purpose pick-ups to more passenger-focused MPVs over the years.
