JLR to unveil a fresh compact electric model as brand expands
【Summary】JLR plans to release a smaller electric model called the "Defender Sport" as part of its brand diversification. The new SUV is expected to utilize the same electric platform as the electric Defender and is set to arrive in 2027. The smaller model will likely borrow design elements from the core Defender model to maintain the distinctive appearance of the Defender family.
Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has been undergoing significant changes, separating its core models into individual brands and announcing the release of several new electric vehicles (EVs) in the future. One of the long-standing rumors is the possibility of a smaller model of the Defender, and it seems that these rumors are becoming more likely to come true.
In line with this, JLR has recently confirmed the development of an electric version of the Defender. It is expected that a smaller variant will also be introduced, utilizing the same platform known as the Electrified Modular Architecture (EMA).
During an exclusive interview with JLR CEO Adrian Mardell, he mentioned that they are considering the creation of other vehicles within the Defender family. He stated, "I would've thought by this time next Global Media Day we'll be clear on what we are comfortable with producing off EMA."
According to rumors, the smaller Defender model might be named the Defender Sport, following the naming convention of the Range Rover Sport, which is the smaller sibling of the Range Rover. Our exclusive renders provide a glimpse of what the Defender Sport could potentially look like.
It is expected that the smaller car will draw styling inspiration from the core Defender model, allowing each brand within the JLR family to have a distinctive appearance. Elements such as shorter overhangs and a boxy utilitarian design, which are characteristic of the Defender lineage, are likely to be featured in the Defender Sport.
