Lotus, the car maker, has introduced a new e-bike with advanced technology from High Performance System (HPS). The Lotus Type 136 e-bike, priced at £20,000 (€25,000), is a high-performance bike that builds on the success of the Type 108 bike used in previous Olympic Games. It is handmade in Italy and features a lightweight carbon fibre frame weighing 9.8kg.

The e-bike is equipped with a Watt Assist Pro Motor system, which is derived from the Mars Lander Project. The motor system, developed by HPS, weighs just 1.2kg in total, with the motor itself weighing only 300 grams. The battery, cleverly disguised as a water bottle, can be detached from the frame with a simple push of a button.

The Lotus Type 136 e-bike will be released as a limited first edition production run of only 136 bikes. Each bike will be individually numbered and will come in an iconic motorsport livery. The standard model will be available for sale in Spring 2024.

Sir Chris Hoy, a former Olympian, expressed his excitement about the new e-bike, saying, "This is an incredible bike, which says so much about the pioneering endeavours of Lotus and the iconic status of its bikes over the years."

Feng Qingfeng, CEO of Lotus Group, which is owned by Geely in China, also commented on the launch of the Type 136, stating, "I am proud to launch the Lotus Type 136 as the next chapter in our high-performance journey. For the past 75 years, Lotus has been relentlessly pushing the boundaries of innovation on the road and track. Type 136 shows that we continue to do so."

The Lotus Type 136 e-bike is expected to expand global perceptions of what to expect from Lotus, as it joins the company's lineup of other electric vehicles, including the Eletre, Emeya, and Evija.
