【Summary】BMW's next M3 model will be fully electric, coexisting with the current ICE M3. It will be based on BMW's Neue Klasse platform and feature the "Heart of Joy" integrated control unit, aiming to retain the driving performance and core ideals of BMW's Ultimate Driving Machine philosophy. The unit allows for sub-one millisecond response times and control over propulsion and recuperation characteristics of each wheel. M3 to Transition to Electric Power

The next BMW to wear the M3 badge will be a fully electric model which will coexist with the current ICE M3 instead of replacing it.

According to BMW M development head Frank Weber, BMW plans to introduce an all-electric M3 at the end of this decade. The new model will be built on BMW's Neue Klasse platform and will feature the "Heart of Joy" integrated control unit. This unit combines BMW's powertrain management software and chassis dynamics into a single system, aiming to uphold BMW's Ultimate Driving Machine philosophy in its electric offerings.

"For us, it's not just about achieving the best 0 to 60 performance. It's about how all the different components work together. We want to ensure that the BMW and our application are right when approaching curves and taking turns. The 'Heart of Joy' will bring a total driving experience to our cars, and it's not easy to replicate," said Frank Weber.

The "Heart of Joy" allows for sub-one millisecond response times and the ability to control the propulsion and recuperation characteristics of each wheel. It can support quad motor drivetrains and deliver up to one megawatt of power. In August 2022, BMW released a video showcasing the features of the i4 M50, demonstrating the capabilities of the "Heart of Joy" in a one-off prototype performing centre-axis doughnuts.

"When you get into a car with one megawatt of performance and the ability to control every individual wheel, you'll be amazed. The engine sound might not be the same, but the car's behavior will be incredible," added Frank Weber.
