Mercedes SUV Crash Ignites Anger, Demonstrations In Goa

A recent incident in Goa involving a Mercedes SUV has sparked outrage and protests in both Mumbai and Goa. The incident occurred two days ago when a 45-year-old businessman, Shripad alias Paresh Sinai Sawardekar, crashed the SUV into multiple vehicles near the Banastari bridge, resulting in the deaths of three individuals and injuries to several others.

The deceased have been identified as Suresh Fadte, 58, and Bhavna Fadte, 52, from Divar, and Arup Karmakar, 26, from Bhandora. The injured individuals include Shankar Halarnkar, 67, Vanita Bhandari, 21, and Raj Majgaonkar, 27.

Following the accident, Shripad Sawardekar was taken into custody by the police. A medical examination confirmed that he was intoxicated at the time of the crash. He has been charged under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Motor Vehicles Act for rash driving, drunk driving, and culpable homicide.

The court has dismissed Shripad Sawardekar's bail application, highlighting his intoxicated state and negligent driving as factors contributing to the fatal accident. The ongoing investigation is still in its early stages and requires more time to thoroughly examine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The incident has sparked public outrage and protests in both Mumbai and Goa. Locals from Divar, the hometown of the deceased couple, have been protesting against the police for not arresting the car owner, Meghana Sawardekar, whom they allege was driving the car at the time of the accident. The police have denied these allegations and assured the public that they are conducting a thorough investigation.

Protesters and concerned citizens are demanding a fair and transparent investigation that holds all responsible parties accountable. Several individuals injured in the accident received medical treatment at the Goa Medical College and Hospital. Shankar Halarnkar, aged 67, required surgery for neck injuries, while Vanita Bhandari, aged 21, suffered multiple fractures but is in stable condition. Raj Majgaonkar, 27, who sustained a forehead injury, is expected to be discharged soon.
