A recent series of articles in the New York Times has been spreading fear about electric bicycles, particularly electric balance bikes for children. However, instead of fearing these bikes, we should embrace them and encourage more parents to put their kids on one.

The main focus of the recent New York Times article was a model called the "K1D", produced by electric bike manufacturer SUPER73. This bike is specifically designed for children and is their first two-wheeler for kids.

Balance bikes are essentially small bikes for young children that teach them how to balance without pedals. Kids push off against the ground and rest their feet on the platforms. These bikes help children develop the intuition to balance and steer. They can easily put their feet down if they lose balance, making it a safer and more effective way to learn to ride a bike compared to training wheels.

Electric balance bikes are a newer version of balance bikes that have a small electric motor and battery added to the frame. Kids still have to push off to get going, but they can engage the motor to keep going for longer periods of time. This makes it more fun for kids and helps them develop the necessary skills to ride a bike faster.

Anecdotal evidence shows the effectiveness of electric balance bikes. For example, a 4-year-old girl who struggled to ride a pedal bike without training wheels was able to ride one after just a few minutes on an electric balance bike. This highlights the power of these bikes as a learning tool.

Electric balance bikes are a way to introduce bike-riding skills to kids in a fun and engaging way. They provide exercise and outdoor time, which is important in a time when childhood obesity rates are high. Critics may argue that kids are being lazy by not pedaling, but the focus at this stage is on balance and developing motor skills.

While adult supervision is necessary, electric balance bikes are a safe way for kids to learn to ride. They can quickly learn the balance part and then move on to more important safety lessons, such as checking for cars before entering the street.

Despite the fear-mongering articles, electric balance bikes are an effective and fun tool for teaching kids to ride a bike. Encouraging kids to get outside, be active, and learn important life skills is always a good thing.

Instead of relying on fear-mongering news, we should focus on the benefits that electric balance bikes bring. Helping more kids learn to ride a bike is worth the small sacrifices we may have to make.
