AA cars has issued a warning to used car buyers in Britain, urging them to be cautious of faulty brakes. According to data analyzed by the platform's expert assessors, 70% of the used cars they inspected had at least one fault. The most common issue found was problems with the brakes, which can cost an average of £400 to fix. Other common faults included signs of previous accident damage and corrosion, as well as clutch malfunctions. The cost to rectify these issues ranged from £600 to £800. The most expensive faults to repair were related to timing chain and belt noises, which could set drivers back as much as £1,200.

In addition to highlighting common faults, the survey also looked at the knowledge of potential buyers. It found that 85% of prospective customers lift up the car's bonnet to inspect it. However, almost half of them (45%) admitted to having no idea what they should be looking for. Only a quarter (24%) were aware that brake issues were the most common flaw to watch out for.

Reacting to the findings, AA president Edmund King emphasized the importance of getting a pre-purchase vehicle inspection. He compared buying a car to buying a house, stating that most people wouldn't buy a house without a survey. King pointed out that many common problems found during inspections are difficult for the average person to spot. While some drivers may carry out basic checks themselves, such as looking at the bonnet, they often lack the knowledge to identify potential issues. AA vehicle inspectors conduct up to 206 checks on a car, making it nearly impossible for non-motoring experts to replicate. King warned that failing to get an inspection could result in drivers having to spend hundreds of pounds on repairs. With 70% of used cars assessed having some kind of issue, purchasing without an inspection poses a significant financial risk. Vehicle inspections can provide buyers with peace of mind and the opportunity to negotiate a lower price or request repairs before finalizing the purchase.
