Mustang GTD: Ford's European Worry
【Summary】Ford has unveiled the Mustang GTD, a high-performance variant designed to compete with European sports cars. The GTD is a road-legal version of Ford's Mustang GT3 car, featuring a supercharged V8 engine with a target of 800bhp. It incorporates race-spec engineering, including active aerodynamics and suspension, some of which are not allowed in certain racing series. The GTD will be a limited-run model with a price starting at $300,000 in the US.
Ford has unveiled its latest high-performance Mustang variant, the Mustang GTD. This road-legal model is designed to take on European competitors and is based on Ford's new Mustang GT3 car. The CEO of Ford, Jim Farley, describes the GTD as the Mustang he has always dreamed of building and hopes to see Porsche, Aston Martin, and Mercedes sweat.
The Mustang GTD is powered by a bespoke 5.2-liter supercharged V8 engine with a dry sump oil system and a 7500rpm redline. It also features an active titanium exhaust for an exhilarating sound. While exact performance figures have not been released, Ford is targeting a power output of around 800bhp. The power is sent to the rear wheels through an eight-speed transaxle gearbox and a carbon fiber driveshaft, ensuring a balanced weight distribution.
One of the standout features of the Mustang GTD is its active aerodynamics, some of which would be illegal in certain racing series. The available aero package includes hydraulically-controlled front flaps and an active rear wing to manage airflow for optimal aerodynamic balance. The GTD also boasts active suspension with variable spring rates and ride height, a feature not allowed in racing. The suspension technology allows the car to change characteristics at the push of a button, with the ride height lowering by 40mm in Track mode.
Inside the GTD, Ford has incorporated some clever features, such as Miko suede seat upholstery and 3D-printed titanium paddle shifters made from recycled F22 Raptors. However, the Mustang GTD will be a limited-run model and potential buyers will have to go through an application process similar to that of the Ford GT.
The starting price for the Mustang GTD in the US is $300,000, so it will require deep pockets to own one of these exclusive high-performance Mustangs.
