Mustang GTD: Ford's Latest European Concern
【Summary】Ford has unveiled the Mustang GTD, a high-performance variant designed to compete with European sports cars. The GTD is a road-legal version of Ford's Mustang GT3 car and features a supercharged V8 engine with a power output of around 800bhp. It also includes race-spec engineering, such as active aerodynamics and suspension, which are not allowed in certain racing series. The GTD will be a limited-run model with a starting price of $300,000 in the US.
Ford has unveiled its new Mustang GTD, a high-performance variant of the iconic Mustang designed to compete with European sports cars. Ford CEO Jim Farley expressed his ambition for the GTD to outperform Porsche, Aston Martin, and Mercedes. The GTD is based on the brand's new Mustang GT3 car, with engineering that is even illegal in certain racing series.
The GTD is not a diesel, despite the similar naming convention used in Europe. Instead, it features a bespoke 5.2-liter supercharged V8 engine with a dry sump oil system and a 7500rpm redline. Ford aims to achieve around 800 horsepower with the GTD. Power is sent to the rear wheels through an eight-speed transaxle gearbox and a carbon fiber driveshaft for optimal weight distribution. The GTD also boasts 20-inch forged aluminum wheels and Brembo carbon ceramic brakes.
One of the notable features of the GTD is its active aerodynamics, which include hydraulically-controlled front flaps and an active rear wing. These features are inspired by motorsports and include technology that is prohibited in certain racing series. The GTD also features active suspension with variable spring rates and ride height, allowing for different driving characteristics at the touch of a button. The interior of the GTD includes Miko suede seat upholstery and 3D-printed titanium paddle shifters made from recycled F22 Raptors.
The Mustang GTD will be a limited-run model, and interested buyers will need to go through an application process similar to that of the Ford GT. Prices for the GTD start at $300,000 in the US.
