New EV coming from BYD by 2023

A new electric pickup truck is set to be released by the end of the year, according to a leaked patent. BYD, the battery maker turned EV manufacturer, continues to expand its electric vehicle offerings with this new truck design.

In September, BYD achieved another record with 151,193 fully electric vehicles sold. This strong growth puts BYD just a few thousand electric models behind Tesla, positioning it as a top-selling EV maker. Tesla delivered 435,059 EVs in the second quarter, while BYD delivered 431,603.

BYD has been finding success not only in China but also overseas. It currently leads in countries such as Thailand, Brazil, Columbia, and Israel. With new models being launched in Japan, Mexico, India, Australia, Hungary, and more, BYD aims to maintain its momentum throughout the rest of the year.

Last month, BYD celebrated the production of its 500,000th Dolphin electric hatchback, closely followed by the accomplishment of the same milestone with its Yuan Plus model.

One of BYD's main advantages is its affordability. While many automakers are experiencing significant losses with each EV sold, BYD is able to generate a profit. The company has achieved nearly full integration of its Dolphin EV, with most components built in-house except for the tires and windows.

BYD, known for its various outdoor brands, is now preparing to launch an electric truck by the end of 2023. Details about the new truck have not been released, but reports suggest it will be part of BYD's Ocean Series. The truck's design has been created by Wolfgang Egger, a former Audi designer now working for BYD, and features the prominent "BYD" logo on the front grille, four doors, and rugged fenders.

During the final stages of testing, the electric pickup truck was spotted with heavy camouflage, resembling the patent images. Although it bears some resemblance to the Toyota Tacoma, it is expected to be slightly shorter, measuring about 209" compared to the Tacoma's 225".

BYD's electric pickup truck will enter the market to compete with Ford's F-150 Lightning, Geely's Radar RD6, and the Dongfeng Rich 6 EV. It is likely to be available in both all-electric and PHEV variants. The interior of the truck has been observed with a head-up display from Huawei. The official launch is expected by the end of the year.

Pickup trucks are gaining popularity in China as people seek outdoor adventures and a break from the daily grind. With their towing and hauling capabilities, trucks are a perfect choice for camping and other outdoor activities. This trend is reflected in the new EV releases in China, including GM's Wuling Bingo featuring an inflatable mattress for camping. Geely's Radar is already exporting electric trucks to overseas markets. More information about BYD's electric pickup truck will be revealed closer to its launch.
