New EV from BYD expected by late 2023

A new electric pickup truck is set to be released by BYD by the end of the year, according to a leaked patent. BYD, which started as a battery maker and transitioned into an EV manufacturer, has been experiencing significant growth in the electric vehicle market. In September alone, the company sold a record 151,193 fully electric vehicles, bringing it within a few thousand units of surpassing Tesla as the top-selling EV maker. BYD's success is not limited to its home market in China, as it currently leads in countries like Thailand, Brazil, Columbia, and Israel. The company has also expanded its presence in Japan, Mexico, India, Australia, Hungary, and more.

BYD's upcoming electric pickup truck is expected to be part of the Ocean Series, a lineup of outdoor-oriented vehicles. The design of the truck, created by ex-Audi designer Wolfgang Egger, features a prominent "BYD" logo on the front grille, four doors, and rugged fenders. Although specific details about the truck have not been released, reports suggest that it will be approximately 209 inches long, making it slightly smaller than the Toyota Tacoma. The truck will compete with other electric pickups such as Ford's F-150 Lightning, Geely's Radar RD6, and the Dongfeng Rich 6 EV. Inside the truck, a head-up display from Huawei has been spotted during testing.

BYD's main advantage in the EV market is its affordability. While many automakers are facing losses on each electric vehicle sold, BYD is able to generate a profit. The company has achieved this by integrating most of the components of its Dolphin EV in-house, with the exception of tires and windows. This cost-effective approach has contributed to BYD's success and allowed the company to expand its product lineup.

As pickup trucks gain popularity in China, EV manufacturers are catering to the demand for outdoor-oriented vehicles. For instance, GM's joint venture in China recently launched the Wuling Bingo, which features an inflatable mattress in the rear for camping. Geely's Radar is also exporting electric trucks to overseas markets. With the upcoming release of BYD's electric pickup truck, more details are expected to be revealed closer to the launch date. Stay tuned for updates on this exciting new addition to BYD's electric vehicle lineup.
