New Tartan Debut at Highland Games
【Summary】King Charles III dons new tartan for Highland games as monarch. The King wore the King Charles III tartan, designed to mark his coronation. He was accompanied by the Queen, Princess Royal, and her husband. The King appeared in good spirits, laughing and clapping during the games. The monarch traditionally becomes chief of the gathering. This is the first time King Charles has appeared as monarch at the games.
During his visit to the Braemar Royal Highland Gathering, King Charles III wore a new tartan named after him. The tartan, designed by the Scottish Tartans Authority, features green, blue, and red colors and was created to commemorate the coronation. Accompanied by the Queen, the King was joined by his sister, the Princess Royal, and her husband, Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence.
Throughout the event, King Charles III appeared to be in good spirits, frequently laughing and clapping while watching the games. John McLeish, chair of the Scottish Tartans Authority, expressed his gratitude for the King's support of tartan and Highland Dress, stating that the King's agreement to have a tartan created in his name is an honor. The King Charles III tartan now holds a place in history, and it was a privilege for McLeish to witness the King wearing it for the first time at Braemar.
Traditionally, the monarch becomes the chief of the gathering, although it has not yet been announced if Charles will assume this role. This was the first time that King Charles III appeared at the games as the monarch, but he had frequently attended in the past when he was the Prince of Wales. The Braemar Highland Gathering is a cherished event for the royal family, and they even used a photograph taken at the games last year for one of their Christmas cards.
During the competition, the King and Queen were seen laughing together, clearly enjoying the games. King Charles III also had the opportunity to present trophies to the winning competitors, who participated in various sports such as shot put and tug-of-war.
