Sustainable trucking company Nikola has announced that it has started production of its hydrogen fuel cell electric truck. The vehicle will have a range of up to 500 miles. Nikola made the announcement on X, formerly Twitter, along with a photo of employees working on the truck. The production facility of the trucking startup can be seen in the photo.
The hydrogen fuel cell truck is likely to be a variant of the Nikola Tre, which is currently being sold as a battery-electric truck. Other hydrogen vehicles from Nikola, such as the Nikola One and Nikola Two, have not been mentioned recently. Nikola had previously predicted that serial production of its hydrogen fuel cell trucks would start in July.
The hydrogen fuel cell truck is expected to have a maximum range of 500 miles, 536 horsepower, and a fueling time of about 20 minutes. Despite past challenges, including controversies related to former CEO Trevor Milton, Nikola seems to be recovering steadily. The company has received orders for 140 hydrogen fuel cell trucks and has also secured a deal with J.B. Hunt Transport, Inc. for the acquisition of 13 zero-emission Class 8 trucks, including three hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles.
