Nissan Motor has announced plans to invest BRL2.8bn (US$575m) in its Brazilian operations over the next two years. The investment will be used to produce two new SUVs and a turbocharged engine. The announcement was made during the company's 23rd anniversary celebration in Brazil, which was attended by 2,400 people including plant workers, government officials, suppliers, and Nissan's global CEO Makoto Uchida.
One of the new models to be produced is the redesigned Kicks compact SUV. While details of the second SUV were not released, Nissan did mention that it would be exported to 20 Latin American countries. The funds will be invested in additional manufacturing equipment and improvements to support the production of these new models.
The powertrain plant, where the celebration took place, will also assemble an advanced turbo engine for use across the brand. This upgrade is the first significant one since the plant started operating in 2014 and is aimed at strengthening its role as an export hub. Over the past decade, minor improvements have been made to the plant, focusing on ergonomics and the incorporation of new technology.
With this new investment, Nissan's cumulative investments in its Resende operations will reach BRL6.2bn. The company is committed to further developing its presence in Brazil and the wider Latin American market.
