【Summary】RAF scrambled jets to intercept Russian bombers north of the Shetland Islands. The Typhoons monitored the Russian aircraft in international airspace to counter any potential threat to UK territory. A Voyager tanker provided air-to-air refueling, allowing the Typhoons to stay in the air for an extended period. This is a routine response as RAF pilots from Lossiemouth frequently carry out intercepts of this kind.

The Royal Air Force (RAF) has responded to an incident involving two Russian bombers near the Shetland Islands. The Russian Tu-142 Bear-F and Tu-142 Bear-J aircraft, used for reconnaissance and anti-submarine warfare, were monitored by RAF Typhoons as they passed through international airspace north of the UK.

Armed forces minister James Heappey commended the RAF crews at Lossiemouth for their constant vigilance in protecting UK airspace. He emphasized that the pilots launched in their Typhoon jets to intercept the Russian bombers and were prepared to counter any potential threat to UK territory.

In addition to the Typhoons, a Voyager tanker was also deployed to provide air-to-air refuelling support throughout the mission. This ensured that the Typhoons could remain airborne for an extended period of time to complete their objectives.

The RAF maintains a strong presence at Lossiemouth, one of its quick reaction alert stations, to swiftly respond to any threats in UK airspace. Recently, RAF pilots from Lossiemouth completed a four-month deployment leading Nato's air policing mission in Estonia, where they carried out over 50 air intercepts.

The lead RAF Typhoon pilot involved in Monday's intercept described the adrenaline rush when the alarm call came in the early hours of the morning. The MoD highlighted that Russian military aircraft entering the UK Flight Information Region can pose hazards to other aircraft.
