RAF Typhoon jets were deployed on Monday morning to intercept Russian bombers flying north of Scotland, according to the UK Government. The intercept took place within NATO's northern air policing area, as the Russian Tu-142 Bear-F and Tu-142 Bear-J maritime patrol bombers transited north of the Shetland Islands. The Typhoons closely monitored the Russian bombers as they passed through international airspace north of the UK.
The RAF Typhoons took off from RAF Lossiemouth, accompanied by a Voyager tanker for air refueling support. The Minister for the Armed Forces, James Heappey, praised the RAF crews at Lossiemouth for their constant vigilance in safeguarding UK airspace. He highlighted the quick response of the Typhoon pilots in intercepting the Russian bombers and their readiness to counter any potential threat to UK territory.
One of the RAF Typhoon pilots involved in the mission expressed satisfaction in successfully intercepting the Russian bombers and maintaining the integrity of UK and NATO airspace. The pilot described the adrenaline rush that came with the scramble alarm in the early hours of the morning. Working closely with ground control operators and receiving air-to-air refueling from an RAF Voyager, the Typhoon pilots remained focused on the mission until the target aircraft departed the UK's area of interest.
