Raising nuclear war risk on Korean Peninsula

North Korean leader, Kim Jong Un, addressed a ceremony on Navy Day and expressed concerns about the increasing presence of war hardware in the waters off the Korean Peninsula. He blamed the US and other hostile forces for creating an unstable environment with the danger of a nuclear war.

Kim was referring to the deployment of advanced weaponry, including nuclear-armed ballistic missile submarines, by the US to the peninsula. These deployments are either part of agreements with regional allies or conducted under the guise of joint military drills.

During a summit at Camp David, the leaders of the US, Japan, and South Korea announced their plan to hold regular joint military exercises. The North Korean leader referred to them as "gang bosses" and criticized the meeting for formulating a "nuclear war provocation."

The North Korean government views all military drills conducted by the US and its regional allies as rehearsals for an invasion. Kim emphasized the need for the North Korean Navy to maintain constant combat alertness and to modernize its weapons and equipment.

According to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), Kim stated that the navy of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) would become a component of the state's nuclear deterrence, carrying out its strategic duty.
