The City of Johannesburg has reported that a fire in the central business district of South Africa's largest city has resulted in 58 bodies being recovered and 43 people being injured. The blaze occurred in a multi-storey residential building in Marshalltown at around 1.30am on Thursday.
According to spokesman Robert Mulaudzi, a search and recovery operation is currently underway, and it is expected that the death toll will increase. Firefighters are actively working their way through the building, with 58 bodies already retrieved. Mulaudzi added that there could potentially be more individuals trapped inside.
