Resignation row escalates: Keir Starmer calls for Nadine Dorries to step down
【Summary】Labour leader Keir Starmer has called for Conservative MP Nadine Dorries to resign, as she has not yet stepped down from her seat despite pledging to do so weeks ago. Two councils in her constituency have also called for her resignation due to a lack of representation. Starmer urged the Chancellor, Rishi Sunak, to address the issue and ensure that Mid Bedfordshire has an MP who will advocate for the constituents.
Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer has called on Conservative MP Nadine Dorries to resign her seat, weeks after she pledged to do so. Dorries had promised to step down from her Mid Bedfordshire seat in early June when Boris Johnson resigned as an MP and she failed to secure a peerage. However, she has not yet followed through on her promise, despite calls from two councils in her constituency for her to step down due to a lack of representation for residents.
Sir Keir Starmer expressed his opinion on the matter during an interview on LBC, stating, "I think she should just go. I have been in Mid Bedfordshire talking to some of her constituents." He also pointed out that Dorries had promised to resign with immediate effect, but it has been ten weeks since then. He urged Rishi Sunak, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, to take action and ensure that the issue is resolved.
The pressure on Nadine Dorries to resign has been increasing, with Shefford Town Council in her constituency sending her a letter calling for her resignation. The council accused her of effectively abandoning the area due to her lack of interest in the constituency, failure to attend local events or services, and the absence of a maintained constituency office. Flitwick Town Council has also called for Dorries to step aside, emphasizing the need for effective representation in the area.
Downing Street has acknowledged that it is unusual for an MP to announce their resignation and not follow through on it. Dorries has previously stated that she is waiting to formally resign while seeking answers from Downing Street regarding her exclusion from a peerage. The Standard has reached out to Nadine Dorries for comment.
