Reviving the Fun: Electric Minis Rekindle Playful Energy
【Summary】Mini is introducing all-electric versions of its Cooper and Countryman models, embracing a more minimalist design language. The new models feature a pared-down and straightforward design, with smoother surfaces and integrated rear lights. The interior is dominated by a 24cm circular touch-screen display and includes the Mini Operating System 9 with an intelligent personal assistant and seven different driving modes.
The BMW-era Mini has always been known for its compact size, but over the years, cars have been getting bigger. However, the original 'new' Mini from 2000 fit perfectly into the compact city car class at that time.
Now, the fifth generation of the Mini is being revealed ahead of the 2023 IAA International Motor Show in Munich. Alongside it is the third generation of the larger Mini Countryman, which is also available in an all-electric version for the first time.
Both the new Mini and Mini Countryman feature a more pared-back and straightforward design language, which Mini calls 'Charismatic Simplicity'. This design approach aims to reset the distortion that had occurred over three generations of the Mini, bringing back the original simplicity in a smoother and more integrated way.
It's interesting to note the influence of Paul Smith's one-off minimalist Mini Electric on these new models. The materials and surfaces are rendered with less fuss, creating an overall minimal look.
The new Mini Cooper SE EV is particularly effective, with an interior dominated by a 24cm circular touch-screen information display. The Mini Countryman has also grown larger and features tech upgrades similar to its smaller sibling.
Both models will be available with traditional combustion engines, but Mini is focusing on promoting the capabilities of the electric versions. The Countryman is expected to have a range of around 287 miles, while the smaller Cooper will have a range of 190 miles in 'E' trim and 250 miles in 'SE' trim.
Both cars are set to hit the market next year, and we look forward to exploring what they have to offer.
MINI Cooper Electric will be available from £30,000 in spring 2024, while the MINI Countryman will be available from £28,500 in February 2024.
