Rolls-Royce Droptail: The Pinnacle of Luxury

This may come as a surprise, but I am not the target audience for what is likely the most expensive new car in the world. I do not possess great wealth or control over a country's resources. However, the Rolls-Royce Droptail has caught my attention with its unique design.

During Monterey Car Week, Rolls-Royce unveiled the Droptail, potentially breaking its own record for the world's priciest car. The previous record was held by the Rolls-Royce Boat Tail, which made its debut at last year's Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este. The Boat Tail's official cost was never disclosed, but it was rumored to be around $28 million. The new Droptail is reported to be even more expensive than its predecessor.

The Droptail, like the Boat Tail, is a coachbuilt design that differs significantly from other Rolls-Royce models. Only four Droptails will be produced, each customized to the owner's preferences. The design was a collaboration between Rolls-Royce and the four customers.

The car's aesthetics pay homage to 1920s roadsters, featuring a long hood, custom rear deck, and a low-slung shoulder line. The first Droptail, named "La Rose Noire," showcases a striking red-and-black color scheme inspired by the Black Baccara flower.

The interior of the Droptail shares similarities with other modern Rolls-Royce models but includes unique elements. The center armrest is a new addition, and the dashboard trim features a red/black geometric pattern reminiscent of the opening credits of "Casino Royale." The rear deck of the Droptail also incorporates the same motif. As a special touch, the car comes with a bespoke Audemars Piguet watch that fits into the dashboard, serving as the car's clock.

Contrary to its two-door design, the Droptail does not rely on the new electric Rolls-Royce Spectre. Instead, it is equipped with a 6.75-liter twin-turbo V12 engine that produces 593 horsepower. While the torque is slightly lower than that of the Phantom, the Droptail still delivers an impressive 620 lb-ft.

The Rolls-Royce Droptail is a remarkable vehicle, meticulously crafted by hand and unlike anything else on the road. Its price tag of $30 million or more may be subject to debate, especially when considering the stunning vintage cars showcased at Pebble Beach. However, in the world of the ultra-wealthy, exclusivity reigns supreme. Being one of only four individuals to own this exquisite Rolls-Royce adds to its value and allure. It can certainly be argued that the Droptail is more deserving of its price tag than the remnants of a burnt Ferrari.
