The future of the Skoda vRS and hot hatches is battery-powered, as demonstrated by cars like the Enyaq, Hyundai Ioniq 5 N, and Abarth 500e. While there may still be some combustion options available, the switch to electric vehicles is inevitable. However, the removal of sound and sensation in EV hot hatches, in particular, is a concern for some. Interestingly, this is not the first time the hot hatch segment has explored alternatives to petrol.

In the early 2000s, Skoda introduced the Fabia vRS, a diesel-powered pocket rocket. Despite initial skepticism, the Fabia vRS gained a reputation for its real-world performance, affordability, and low running costs. Although diesel did not dominate the hot hatch market, it proved to be a viable alternative, especially with the ability to easily tune the 1.9 PD engine.

When Skoda replaced the diesel engine with a supercharged and turbocharged 1.4 petrol engine, some of the Fabia vRS's distinct identity was lost. However, the old diesel workhorses gained even more affection when the petrol-powered models faced reliability issues. Today, the original Fabia vRS models are considered cult classics, with limited edition cars from the end of the production run highly prized.

This particular Fabia vRS may not be a limited edition model, but it has incredibly low mileage (just 22,000) and features a Milltek exhaust, which demonstrates the owner's dedication. The car has undergone regular servicing, including a recent cambelt, water pump, and MOT. Its red paint and cloth upholstery remain in excellent condition, a testament to Skoda's build quality.

With an asking price of £8,995, this Fabia vRS may seem expensive compared to its original retail price. However, these cars are becoming increasingly rare due to their long lives of hard work and potential modifications. Finding one in such good condition is a rare opportunity for fans and collectors. Even if it may not be everyone's cup of tea, the prices of hot hatch curios from the 20th century prove that there is a market for these unique vehicles.
