Supercharged LFP battery: 10-minute charge, 249-mile range

Chinese battery manufacturer CATL has introduced a new electric vehicle (EV) battery called Shenxing, which boasts a 400km (249 miles) driving range with a 10-minute charge. This superfast charging lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery is also claimed to have a range of over 700km (435 miles) on a single full charge. CATL supplies batteries to major car manufacturers like Tesla, Toyota, and VW, and believes that this new battery will alleviate fast charging anxiety for EV users.

The Shenxing battery utilizes super electronic network cathode technology and fully nano-crystallized LFP cathode material to create a super-electronic network. This network enables the extraction of lithium ions and a rapid response to charging signals. The battery combines superfast charging, high energy density, and a high level of safety, pushing innovation in the battery industry. It even allows for normal charging at low temperatures, with the ability to charge to 80% capacity in just 10 minutes at room temperature and in as low as -10°C.

Dr. Wu Kai, the chief scientist of CATL, emphasized the importance of advanced technology being accessible to all EV consumers. CATL plans to achieve mass production of the Shenxing battery by the end of 2023, with electric vehicles equipped with this battery hitting the market in the first quarter of next year.

In related news, Toyota has also been working on EV and battery innovations. The company's plans include long-range battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and all-solid-state batteries. Toyota's battery technology has the potential to deliver a range of up to 1,200km (746 miles) with a quick charge time of 10 minutes or less. The company is aiming for commercialization of this technology in 2027/2028.
