Volkswagen has officially begun production of its ID.7 electric saloon ahead of its launch in Europe later this year. The announcement was made in a social media post celebrating the "symbolic start of production" at the Emden plant in Germany. This follows a small production run that took place in June.

The CEO of Volkswagen passenger cars, Thomas Shafer, praised the team at the Emden plant, stating, "The ID.7 is a top car from a top team. A big compliment to all our colleagues in Emden who have been so active in making the start of production a full success. Thanks everyone for your commitment!"

The ID.7, which was unveiled earlier this year, is positioned as a "comfortable limousine for long distance travel." It introduces a new segment in the ID family and indirectly replaces the Passat and Arteon models. The car is designed to offer long ranges, fast charging, a spacious interior, and intuitive operation.

As a competitor to the Tesla Model 3 and Hyundai Ioniq 6, the ID.7 will provide a range of up to 435 miles and charging rates of up to 200kW. There will be two variants available: the entry-level ID.7 Pro model with a 77kWh battery offering up to 382 miles of range, and the Pro S derivative with an 82kWh pack for the headline 435-mile range. Both variants feature a rear-mounted 286hp single motor, which is the most powerful and highest-torque electric drive motor in a Volkswagen ID. model to date. A dual-motor four-wheel drive version will be introduced later.

The Emden plant is exclusively manufacturing the ID.7 for the European and North American markets. The plant has undergone significant investment, totaling over one billion euros since 2019, to convert it for e-mobility production.

The ID.7 is one of 10 new electric models that Volkswagen plans to launch between 2023 and 2026. This lineup includes the new ID.3, the long-wheelbase ID. Buzz launched this year, a compact electric SUV in 2026, and the production version of the ID.2, which will be priced at less than €25k (around £22k). Volkswagen aims to have the widest range of electric vehicles compared to its competitors and is targeting an 80% electric car share in Europe by 2030. The company also plans to produce only electric vehicles in Europe by 2033.
