Sustainable Terminal near Inner City of Berlin

The road freight provider DHL Freight is constructing a new DHL Freight terminal in Berlin-Marienfelde. Situated on the grounds of a former distillery in the southern part of Berlin, the newly constructed terminal will expand and strengthen the company's German and European network, providing an even faster and more efficient service for its customers.

According to a company release, the new terminal will be powered by renewable energy sources, demonstrating DHL Freight's commitment to sustainability. The forwarding facility will cover an area of 5,200 m2 and will include an office building and 49 loading bays. It is set to replace the previous facility in the city due to insufficient capacity.

The primary objective of the new terminal in Marienfelde is to improve the distribution of freight and shipments over the last mile in Berlin. The completion of the terminal and the start of operations are planned for summer 2024.

Thomas Vogel, CEO DHL Freight DACH, UK & IE, expressed his pride in the new terminal, stating that it expands the company's network and underscores their commitment to sustainable logistics. Vogel emphasized that DHL Freight aims to lead by example in transport and the construction and operation of terminals.

The construction of the new terminal near Berlin's city center allows DHL Freight to expand its network capacity while focusing on innovation and sustainability. The terminal will incorporate environmentally friendly technologies and solutions to improve services in the Berlin metropolitan area. It will utilize alternative drive technologies such as electric forklifts, natural gas-powered (CNG) vehicles, and future plans for battery electric trucks. The sustainability concept also includes a heat pump, a rainwater cistern, charging infrastructure with green electricity, and a photovoltaic installation to reduce environmental impact.
