Women play a significant role in the Indian electric car market, with nearly 24 per cent of electric vehicles sold by Tata Motors being purchased by women. This is due to several factors, including the ease of driving, safety features, and the increasing availability of charging infrastructure, according to Vivek Srivatsa, Head-Marketing, Sales and Service Strategy at Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Ltd.

In the past, electric vehicles were often seen as a secondary choice when buying a car. However, the perception has shifted, and now a majority of customers consider electric vehicles as their primary choice, Srivatsa stated. The states of Kerala and Maharashtra are leading the way in electric vehicle adoption, he added.

Srivatsa, who recently participated in a women's car rally in Kochi, highlighted how customers have embraced change by demonstrating a significant increase in the sales of Tata EVs in recent years. He mentioned that in FY20, around 1,200 EVs were sold, followed by approximately 4,200 units in FY21, and a substantial growth to 19,000 units in FY22. Last year, the company sold 50,000 units, achieving a remarkable growth rate of 154 per cent over FY22.

Reaching a significant milestone, Tata Motors recently surpassed one lakh EV sales in the country. Srivatsa shared that it took 44 months to sell the first 10,000 units since the launch of the first product in 2017. However, the next 10,000-50,000 units were sold in just 15 months, and the subsequent 50,000 units only took nine months. He expressed optimism that the company would achieve the next 50,000 sales within 5-6 months.

Looking ahead, Tata Motors plans to expand its electric vehicle lineup by introducing six more EV products by 2025, bringing the total number of variants to 10. The company's strong performance in Q1 FY24, with record-breaking quarterly sales of 19,346 vehicles (a 105 per cent increase over Q1 FY23), was driven by the success of the Tiago EV and consistent demand for other electric vehicles, Srivatsa mentioned.

Srivatsa also praised the charging infrastructure in Kerala, considering it to be among the best in the country, further supporting the growth of electric vehicles in the region.
