The deaths of two teenagers who attended the same DJ event in Glasgow are currently under investigation as drug-related incidents, although there is no evidence to suggest that the deaths are connected, according to a Police Scotland chief.
The two 18-year-old men, who did not know each other, were both present at SWG3 on Saturday where DJ Ben Hemsley was performing. The event took place in the venue's Galvanisers Yard from 2pm to 10pm, followed by an indoor afterparty until 3am on Sunday.
One of the teenagers fell ill in the Constarry Road area of Croy, North Lanarkshire, around 11.20pm on Saturday and was taken to University Hospital Monklands in Airdrie. Unfortunately, he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. The second man collapsed at the music venue around 2.20am on Sunday and was taken to Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow, where he also died shortly after.
Chief Superintendent Mark Sutherland, divisional commander for Greater Glasgow, expressed condolences to the families and friends of the deceased. He stated that both men attended the same event but were unknown to each other. While the deaths are being investigated as drug-related, there is currently no evidence to suggest a connection between the two incidents. Authorities are determined to establish the full circumstances surrounding the deaths and are working with the venue, NHS colleagues, and Public Health Scotland to ensure a collaborative and health-focused approach to the investigation.
A spokesperson for SWG3 expressed their devastation at the news and extended their deepest sympathies to the families. They also stated that they would continue to cooperate with the police during their inquiries.
