Tesla Model 3 Adds Overhead PRND Controls

Home > Industry Analysis > Content

【Summary】Tesla's new Model 3 features backup PRND buttons on the ceiling, a change that may take some getting used to. The buttons are subtle and almost invisible from multiple angles, but they serve as a fail-safe in case the screen freezes. The drive mode strip has been moved to the ceiling, and there are three ways to operate the vehicle: using the gas pedal, using controls on the center display, or pressing the touch-sensitive buttons on the ceiling.

Tesla has sold over two million Model 3s in the six years that the unit has been on sale. The popularity of the vehicle is expected to continue growing as it becomes available in North America and the UK. Even with the upcoming release of the facelifted version, people may still choose to order the non-facelifted all-electric sedan. However, there is one change in the refreshed Model 3 that might take some getting used to - the backup gear shifter is now located on the ceiling, in addition to the absent indicator stalks.

During the unveiling of the facelifted Model 3, Tesla handpicked media representatives to have the first look at the vehicle. These representatives likely had to follow a script and adhere to certain guidelines within a limited time frame. As a result, many popular reviewers failed to notice and comment on the panel where the hazard warning lights button is located. However, recent photos published on Tesla's Instagram account reveal the presence of markings etched or engraved between the dome lights. These markings appear to be the letters P, R, N, and D, suggesting that they serve as a drive mode fail-safe.

Initially, there was skepticism regarding Tesla's decision to eliminate the touch-sensitive drive mode strip found in other Tesla models like the Model S and Model X. Early images of the refreshed Model 3 showed a bumper camera, which excited fans as it would have been a useful addition, especially with the removal of ultrasonic sensors. Unfortunately, Tesla later updated the photos and videos, removing the camera. However, it was discovered that the backup PRND buttons are now located on a separate panel on the ceiling of the new Model 3, positioned between the sun visors. While this placement offers convenience in case the screen freezes, the buttons are barely visible from various angles.

During the IAA Mobility 2023 event in Munich, Germany, the new Model 3 was showcased to the public, allowing them to see and enter the vehicle. However, even those who filmed the EV failed to notice the relocation of the drive mode strip to the ceiling. The subtle change can only be recognized if one is aware of its presence beforehand. German journalists from auto motor und sport confirmed the accuracy of these observations. They revealed that there are three ways to initiate the new Model 3: the driver can press the gas pedal when prompted on the screen (known as Autostart), use the controls on the center display to override the automatic detection of the drive mode, or press the touch-sensitive buttons now situated on the ceiling of the EV.

As of now, Tesla has not updated the Model 3 for the American market, and the same applies to the UK. Despite the emergence of pictures showing right-hand drive models, it is unlikely that Tesla will make a last-minute change and relocate the PRND buttons to the center console, below the wireless phone charger, as they are currently positioned in the Model S and Model X. However, Tesla is known for its surprises, and with Elon Musk as the unpredictable CEO, anything could happen.
