Tesla Unveils Versatile Charging Solution for Electric Vehicles

Tesla is set to release its latest charging solution, the Universal Wall Connector, in October 2023. Priced at $785 in Canada ($595 USD), this charging solution is designed for both Tesla and non-Tesla electric vehicles. It is also suitable for apartments, hotels, and offices, making it a versatile option for charging electric vehicles in North America.

The Universal Wall Connector offers several key features. It has an 11.5 kW / 48 amp output, providing up to 44 miles of range in just an hour. It also includes a J1772 adapter, ensuring compatibility with various electric vehicles. The connector has an auto-sensing handle tailored for Tesla charge ports and can be controlled and monitored through the Tesla app via Wi-Fi connectivity. It can be installed both indoors and outdoors, with variable amperage options available. Additionally, it allows for power sharing among six Wall Connectors simultaneously and comes with a 24-foot cable for extended reach. Residential installations are covered by a four-year warranty.

The Universal Wall Connector is essentially Tesla's Wall Connector with a built-in J1772 adapter. One interesting feature is that the adapter can only be released when the unit is powered on, preventing theft. Tesla emphasizes the need for professional installation and provides a directory of over 1,000 certified installers for user convenience.

On the commercial front, Tesla is inviting property managers and developers to join the Charging Partners network. By incorporating the Wall Connector into their facilities, businesses can offer rapid EV charging, attracting and retaining clientele. These installations also come with the advantage of pay-per-use systems and continuous remote monitoring.

For those interested in the regular Wall Connector for Tesla vehicles only, it is available for $650. However, for an additional $135, customers can have the J1772 adapter built-in to one charging unit for their home or business.

As a side note, Tesla is planning to introduce enhanced features for the Tesla app later this year. In other news, Tesla has launched a new Model S and Model X Standard Range with a lower cost in Canada, and EV automaker Fisker has announced its adoption of Tesla's North American Charging Standard.
