Indian 4x4 vehicle making its way to New Zealand dealerships?
【Summary】Mahindra, an Indian automaker, is looking to expand its model lineup in New Zealand and may introduce the Thar, a popular off-roading vehicle. Previous attempts to launch the Thar in Australasia were blocked by legal challenges from Jeep. Mahindra is considering launching the Thar as a competitor to off-roaders like the Suzuki Jimny and the Jeep Wrangler. It is possible that the Thar's next facelift will include full electrification. Mahindra has unveiled the Thar.
Mahindra is preparing to enter the New Zealand market once again and is considering expanding its model line-up, potentially including an iconic Indian off-roader. There is speculation that the new model could be electric, adding to Mahindra's commitment to sustainable mobility.
The Thar, which traces its roots back to Mahindra's production of Jeep Willys vehicles in the late 1940s, has gained a cult following in India. Despite previous attempts to introduce the Thar to Australasia, legal challenges from Jeep's parent company have prevented its entry.
In a recent roundtable discussion with New Zealand media, Mahindra's automotive division president expressed the company's desire to launch the Thar in New Zealand to compete with other rugged off-roaders like the Suzuki Jimny, the upcoming GWM Tank, and the Jeep Wrangler.
In 2021, Mahindra faced legal action from Jeep when it announced plans to launch the Thar in Australia. Mahindra was forced to confirm that it would not sell the current Thar in the country and would provide prior notice to Jeep before introducing any future models.
Mahindra may be waiting for the next facelift of the Thar to address concerns about its resemblance to the Wrangler. The facelift could also include full electrification, aligning with Mahindra's recent unveiling of the Thar.e Electric Concept in South Africa.
The Thar.e Electric Concept features a distinct design that sets it apart from the Wrangler, with unique grille, headlights, and tail lights. It is built on a different platform and will have a dual-motor powertrain and four-wheel drive capabilities. Reports suggest that a production version of the Thar.e will be launched in India in late 2024 or early 2025, potentially paving the way for its introduction in New Zealand.
Currently, the Thar is available in a short-wheelbase two-door configuration with diesel and petrol engine options. Mahindra is also testing long-wheelbase five-door Thars to broaden the model's appeal.
Jeep's legal battles with Mahindra over the Roxor in Australasia mirror similar disputes in the United States. Stellantis, Jeep's parent company, has sued Mahindra multiple times over the design of the Roxor. While Stellantis initially won a case against Mahindra, a recent ruling allows Mahindra to produce and sell the 2020 and future Roxor models in North America.
