Toyota Australia pauses Camry hybrid orders

Toyota Australia has announced that it has temporarily stopped taking orders for Camry hybrid variants due to overwhelming demand. The company stated that 90% of customers have chosen the petrol electric models, resulting in extended wait times for customers. Despite efforts to increase supply, including improved production of components affected by global shortages, customer wait times remain above two years.

Sales chief Sean Hanley reassured customers that Toyota Australia is doing everything possible to expedite delivery of vehicles as they arrive. The company's global production teams have implemented countermeasures to address component shortages, such as semiconductors. In the nine months leading up to September 30th, Toyota Australia delivered 7,130 new Camry vehicles, with 6,490 of them being hybrid variants.

Toyota Australia started producing Camry hybrids in 2009 but ceased manufacturing in Australia in 2017. The closure of the Altona plant in Melbourne led to the company sourcing fully imported vehicles, mainly from Japan.

Meanwhile, Toyota's parent company in Japan has extended its domestic production shutdown due to component shortages. The shutdown affects 10 assembly lines at six plants and is a result of an explosion at a key supplier. The impact of this event on Toyota's production capabilities is yet to be determined.
