Toyota Land Cruiser gets new power options

Toyota has introduced an updated version of its popular Land Cruiser off-roader. The new model boasts a more robust chassis, an eight-speed automatic transmission, and the option of a hybrid powertrain.

The design of the Land Cruiser has also been enhanced. Toyota has abandoned the previous generation's awkward and angular bodywork in favor of a sleek retro style inspired by their iconic models from the 1980s and 1990s.

Despite the changes in appearance, the fundamental formula of the Land Cruiser remains the same. The vehicle still features a traditional ladder frame, although it has been strengthened by 50% and now offers a towing capacity of 3.5 tons. The engine and transmission drive solid-beam axles.

The Land Cruiser shares the same GA-F platform as the full-size 300-series model, which is not currently available for purchase in the UK or western Europe.

At present, power is provided by a 2.8-liter diesel engine that delivers 201 horsepower and 500Nm of torque. In 2025, Toyota plans to offer a 48V mild hybrid system as an option for improved fuel economy at low speeds and during stop-start driving.

Both engine options will be paired with a new eight-speed Direct Shift automatic transmission, which is expected to provide smoother gear changes compared to the previous six-speed transmission. It is unclear whether a manual option will be available.

The new Land Cruiser also boasts enhanced off-road capabilities. It features shorter overhangs, bodywork designed to provide better visibility of the terrain, and a disconnecting front anti-roll bar. This bar can be operated from a switch on the dashboard, improving ride quality and handling on rough terrain.

Toyota has also made changes to the steering system, replacing hydraulic power steering with electric power steering. This change is said to reduce kickback and improve maneuverability at all speeds.

Given the vehicle's intended use for rugged off-road driving, the body panels have been designed for easy repair or replacement. This is particularly true for the front bumper, which is divided into several sections.

Inside the Land Cruiser, buyers can expect a durable interior with a central screen and a series of large buttons that can be easily operated even with gloves. The vehicle will be available in both five- and seven-seat configurations.

Pre-sales for the updated Land Cruiser will begin later this year, and deliveries are expected to start in the first half of 2024. Additionally, a limited First Edition model will be offered, with only around 3,000 units available in Europe. This special edition will feature classic round headlights and will be offered in sand or smoky blue paintwork.
