Toyota Land Cruiser gets updated with diesel and hybrid engines

Toyota has introduced an updated version of its iconic Land Cruiser off-roader. The new model features a stronger chassis, an eight-speed automatic transmission, and the option of a hybrid powertrain. In terms of appearance, Toyota has opted for sleek retro panelling inspired by its 1980s and 1990s models, departing from the previous generation's angular design.

Despite the updates, the Land Cruiser maintains its traditional formula. The body still sits on a ladder frame, although it is now 50% stiffer and has an increased towing capacity of 3.5 tons. The engine and transmission drive solid-beam axles, ensuring reliability and durability.

The Land Cruiser's chassis is based on the GA-F platform, which is also used in the full-size 300-series Land Cruiser. However, the 300-series is not available in the UK or western Europe.

Currently, power is generated by a 2.8-liter diesel engine with 201 horsepower and 500Nm of torque. Toyota plans to offer a 48V mild hybrid system as an option in 2025, which is expected to improve fuel economy in low-speed and stop-start driving scenarios.

The new Land Cruiser is equipped with an eight-speed Direct Shift automatic transmission, replacing the previous six-speed version. This upgrade promises smoother gear changes, although it is unclear whether a manual option will be available.

Toyota has also enhanced the Land Cruiser's off-road capabilities. The vehicle now features shorter overhangs, improved bodywork for better terrain visibility, and a disconnecting front anti-roll bar. The latter can be operated using a switch on the dashboard, providing a better ride quality and easier handling on rough terrain.

In terms of steering, the Land Cruiser has transitioned from hydraulic to electric power steering. Toyota claims that this change reduces kickback and improves maneuverability at all speeds.

Considering the vehicle's intended purpose for tough off-road driving, the body panels have been designed for easy repair or replacement. This is particularly true for the front bumper, which is divided into several sections.

Inside the Land Cruiser, buyers can expect a rugged interior with a central screen and chunky buttons that can be operated with gloved fingers. The vehicle will be available in both five- and seven-seat configurations.

Pre-sales for the new Land Cruiser will begin later this year, and deliveries are expected to commence in the first half of 2024. Additionally, there will be a limited First Edition model, with only around 3,000 units planned for Europe. This special edition will feature classic round headlights and will be offered in sand or smoky blue paintwork.
