Toyota Land Cruiser gets updated with diesel and hybrid engines

Toyota has introduced an updated version of its iconic Land Cruiser off-roader. The new model boasts a stronger chassis, an eight-speed automatic transmission, and the option of a hybrid powertrain. In terms of aesthetics, Toyota has opted for a sleek retro design inspired by its popular 60- and 80-series models from the 1980s and 1990s, replacing the previous generation's angular tinwork.

Despite the cosmetic changes, the Land Cruiser's fundamental formula remains the same. It still features a traditional ladder frame, albeit one that is 50% stiffer and offers a towing capacity of 3.5 tons. The engine and transmission drive solid-beam axles, maintaining the vehicle's rugged performance.

The Land Cruiser's chassis is built on the same GA-F platform as the full-size 300-series model, which is not currently available in the UK or western Europe. Power is provided by a 2.8-liter diesel engine with 201 horsepower and 500Nm of torque. In 2025, Toyota plans to offer a 48V mild hybrid system as an option, which will enhance fuel economy during low-speed and stop-start driving.

Both diesel engine variants will be equipped with an eight-speed Direct Shift automatic transmission, offering smoother shifting compared to the previous six-speed version. It is unclear at this time whether a manual transmission option will be available. Additionally, the new Land Cruiser features improved off-road capabilities, including shorter overhangs, terrain-friendly bodywork, and a disconnecting front anti-roll bar that can be controlled via a dashboard switch. These enhancements aim to provide a better-quality ride and easier handling on rough terrains.

Other changes include a transition from hydraulic to electric power steering, which Toyota claims reduces kickback and improves maneuverability at all speeds. The body panels have been designed for easy repair or replacement, particularly the front bumper, which is divided into several sections. Inside the vehicle, buyers can expect a rugged interior with a central screen and chunky buttons that can be operated even with gloved fingers. The Land Cruiser will be available in both five- and seven-seat configurations.

Pre-sales for the updated Land Cruiser are set to begin later this year, with deliveries expected to commence in the first half of 2024. Toyota will also release a limited First Edition model, limited to approximately 3,000 units for Europe. This special edition will feature classic round headlights and will be offered in sand or smoky blue paintwork.
