Toyota Land Cruiser gets updated with diesel and hybrid options

Toyota has introduced an updated version of its popular Land Cruiser off-roader. The new model boasts a stronger chassis, an eight-speed automatic transmission, and the option of a hybrid powertrain. In terms of aesthetics, Toyota has opted for a sleek retro design inspired by its iconic models from the 1980s and 1990s, replacing the previous generation's angular appearance.

Despite the visual changes, the Land Cruiser's fundamental formula remains unchanged. It still features a traditional ladder frame, albeit one that is 50% stiffer and offers a towing capacity of 3.5 tons. The engine and transmission drive solid-beam axles, maintaining the vehicle's robustness.

The updated Land Cruiser shares the same GA-F platform as the full-size 300-series, which is not available in the UK or western Europe. Currently, power is derived from a 2.8-liter diesel engine that produces 201 horsepower and 500Nm of torque. However, by 2025, Toyota plans to offer a 48V mild hybrid system as an option, aimed at improving fuel efficiency during low-speed and stop-start driving.

Both diesel and hybrid variants will be equipped with a new eight-speed Direct Shift automatic transmission, promising smoother gear changes compared to the previous six-speed version. It is unclear whether a manual option will be available.

The off-road capabilities of the Land Cruiser have also been enhanced. The vehicle now features shorter overhangs, redesigned bodywork to provide better visibility of the terrain, and a disconnecting front anti-roll bar. This bar can be operated using a switch on the dashboard, improving the quality of the ride and making it easier to handle rough terrain.

In terms of handling, Toyota has made a change from hydraulic to electric power steering. This transition is said to reduce kickback and enhance maneuverability at all speeds.

Considering the Land Cruiser's purpose as a rugged off-road vehicle, the body panels have been designed for easy repair or replacement. The front bumper, in particular, is divided into several sections for convenience.

Inside the vehicle, buyers can expect a durable interior with a central screen and chunky buttons that can be easily operated with gloves. The Land Cruiser will be available in both five- and seven-seat configurations.

Pre-sales for the new Land Cruiser will begin later this year, with deliveries expected to commence in the first half of 2024. Additionally, a limited First Edition model will be offered, featuring classic round headlights and a choice of sand or smoky blue paintwork. Only around 3,000 units of this special edition will be produced for the European market.
