Toyota Land Cruiser revamped with diesel and hybrid engines
【Summary】Toyota has unveiled an updated version of the Land Cruiser, featuring a stronger chassis, sleek retro panelling, and the option of a hybrid powertrain. The off-roader retains its traditional body-on-frame construction and solid-beam axles. It will initially be powered by a 2.8-liter diesel engine, with the option of a 48V mild hybrid system in 2025. The vehicle also boasts improved off-road capabilities, including a disconnecting front anti-roll bar and electric power steering.
Toyota has introduced an updated version of its popular Land Cruiser off-roader. The new model features a stronger chassis, an eight-speed automatic transmission, and the option for a hybrid powertrain. The design has also been improved, with a sleek retro paneling inspired by Toyota's iconic models from the 1980s and 1990s.
The basic formula of the Land Cruiser remains the same, with a body that sits on a traditional ladder frame and solid-beam axles driven by the engine and transmission. The chassis used in this model is the same as the full-size 300-series Land Cruiser, which is not available in the UK or western Europe.
Power for the Land Cruiser comes from a 2.8-liter diesel engine, producing 201 horsepower and 500 Nm of torque. In 2025, an optional 48V mild hybrid system will be offered, improving fuel economy at low speeds and in stop-start driving. Both engine options will be paired with an eight-speed Direct Shift automatic transmission.
The new Land Cruiser also boasts enhanced off-road capabilities, thanks to shorter overhangs, improved bodywork for better visibility of the terrain, and a disconnecting front anti-roll bar. The vehicle now features electric power steering, reducing kickback and improving maneuverability at all speeds.
The body panels of the Land Cruiser have been designed for easy repair or replacement, particularly the front bumper which comes in multiple sections. Inside the vehicle, buyers can expect a rugged interior with a central screen and chunky buttons that can be operated with gloved fingers. The Land Cruiser will be available in both five- and seven-seat configurations.
Pre-sales for the updated Land Cruiser will begin later this year, with deliveries expected to start in the first half of 2024. Additionally, a limited-edition First Edition model will be offered, featuring classic round headlights and a choice of sand or smoky blue paintwork. Only around 3,000 examples of this special model will be built for Europe.
