Toyota's Electric Off-Roader to Debut at Tokyo Mobility Show

You are now looking at an electric version of the Toyota Land Cruiser SUV, which will be showcased at the Tokyo mobility show. This new Land Cruiser Se is a seven-seat battery electric vehicle (BEV) and will be exhibited alongside other Toyota concepts. These concepts include a pickup, sporty electric concept, and a practical compact e-SUV.

While details about the new Land Cruiser are limited, Toyota has released several pictures of the new concept. The BEV Land Cruiser Se features a smoother front end compared to the standard car, which is expected to improve its aerodynamic efficiency. As an electric vehicle, the Land Cruiser Se benefits from the low-end power and high-torque of a BEV, making it more suitable for off-road driving. Additionally, the quieter powertrain contributes to a more refined cabin experience on the road.

The new 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser is described as all-new and will maintain its rough and tough off-road capabilities. The UK order books will open in the autumn, with the first deliveries expected in the first half of 2024. This model has been incredibly successful for Toyota, with over 11.3 million sales since the launch of the first Toyota BJ-generation Land Cruiser in 1951.

The new Land Cruiser embraces a touch of retro style, as evidenced by its display alongside a classic FJ62 from the 1980s. While it incorporates nostalgic design elements, the new Land Cruiser remains up to date in terms of engineering. It adopts Toyota's global GA-F platform, which enables improvements such as electric power steering and a new anti-roll bar system for enhanced off-road performance.

The GA-F platform provides a stiffer base for the Land Cruiser, ensuring its durability and capability off-road. European buyers will have the option of a 2.8-liter turbodiesel engine, which is expected to produce 201bhp and have a towing capacity of up to 3500kg. An eight-speed automatic transmission will be the sole choice initially, but a 48-volt mild hybrid system will be introduced in early 2025 to reduce fuel consumption and emissions.

The design of the 2024 Land Cruiser combines tradition with modernity, resulting in a timeless look that conveys its ability to withstand harsh conditions. The exterior is characterized by its boxy and functional aesthetic, with just the right amount of retro charm. The interior offers a spacious cabin with the option of five or seven seats. The instruments and switchgear are designed to be easily operated even when driving on rough terrain. The digital screen provides information on differentials and traction control systems for off-road enthusiasts.

The first Land Cruiser models to be available will be the limited First Edition, featuring round headlights and two-tone paintwork. Pricing has not been announced yet, but it is expected to exceed £50,000. The demand for the Land Cruiser is high, as indicated by Toyota's UK website stating that the model is currently off-sale due to unprecedented demand.
