BMW i5 Electric Review

Running costs for a BMW i5 can be quite high, with our test car priced at £115,000. This puts it in competition with other luxury electric vehicles like the Audi e-tron GT and Porsche Taycan. However, the single-motor version of the i5 is more reasonably priced. Additionally, company drivers can benefit from huge savings in Benefit In Kind taxes, and most owners will have the convenience of off-street parking for home charging and cheap off-peak electricity rates. Overall, the i5 lives up to its high price tag. Expert rating: 3/5

Reliability is often a concern with premium brands like BMW, as their complex products can be costly to repair. Since the 5 Series and the i5 electric derivative are relatively new to the market, it remains to be seen how they will fare in terms of reliability. Expert rating: 3/5

BMW has incorporated advanced technology in the i5 to enhance safety. While features like the zero-tolerance bonging for exceeding speed limits can be annoying, they are now mandatory. The lane-keeping assistance and semi-automated lane changes are effective, although the latter can be intrusive on larger roads. BMW has put effort into keeping drivers on the straight and narrow. Expert rating: 5/5

The BMW i5 offers ample space for four passengers to travel comfortably. Although the traditional saloon format may not fully utilize the available space, there is a large boot for storage. The electric propulsion system provides a silent and powerful driving experience, with less top-heavy rolling compared to SUVs. However, there can be some tire noise on noisy roads, and the i5 is not as smooth as its Mercedes counterparts. The optional Comfort Plus Pack adds luxurious features, such as power-adjustable and heated seats. Expert rating: 4/5

The BMW i5 comes with impressive features, including a fully digital driving environment with paired digital instruments and a large central screen. The operating system is user-friendly and integrates well with CarPlay and Android Auto. Additional features like a Harman Kardon surround sound stereo and touch-sensitive dashboard add to the overall experience. However, some of the standard trim may feel cheap for a car in this price range. Expert rating: 5/5
