Toyota's Stallion's Competition

Toyota is set to revive the Stallion nameplate in 2024 with the introduction of a club-cab compact bakkie. This vehicle is designed to be a utilitarian workhorse and will compete against other models in its segment.

Before we discuss the competition, let's take a look at the fundamental characteristics of the Stallion. It will have a slightly smaller form factor compared to the current-generation Hilux, measuring 5 300 mm long, 1 785 mm wide, and 1 740 mm tall. In comparison, the Hilux is 5 325 mm long, 1 900 mm wide, and 1 815 mm tall.

Although no details have been released about the Stallion's powertrain, speculation suggests that it will be equipped with a 2.0-litre petrol four-cylinder engine. As for the price, industry sources estimate that it will start at R190 000 and position itself as a straightforward work vehicle rather than a lifestyle bakkie.

Another contender in the compact bakkie segment is the Suzuki Super Carry 1.2 PICK UP. This model has a no-nonsense design and is powered by a 1.2-litre four-cylinder petrol engine. It has a length of 3 800 mm, a width of 1 562 mm, and a height of 1 883 mm. The Super Carry also offers a ground clearance of 175 mm and a payload capacity of 750 kg. The price for the Suzuki Super Carry starts at R177 900.

The JAC X100 1.2 single cab dropside is known for its affordability, fuel efficiency, and impressive load-carrying capabilities. This model is larger than the Suzuki Super Carry, measuring 4 435 mm long, 1 560 mm wide, and 1 825 mm tall. It has a ground clearance of 171 mm and a payload capacity of 1040 kg. The JAC X100 is priced at R199 900.

Mahindra's Bolero 2.5Di single cab Maxitruck Plus stands out with its large form factor and unique styling. It is the largest model on this list, with dimensions of 4 925 mm in length, 1 700 mm in width, and 1 825 mm in height. The Bolero is equipped with a 2.5-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine, offering a power output of 46 kW and a torque of 195 Nm. The starting price for the Mahindra Bolero is R204 999.
