V8 comeback
【Summary】Mercedes-AMG is reportedly planning to bring back the V8 engine for its C63 sports sedan due to slow sales of the new four-cylinder model. The company is said to be preparing to install the 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 in the car by 2026. While the new C63 features an impressive four-cylinder engine, buyers have shown a preference for the V8 power that AMG is known for. Mercedes-AMG has previously stated its intention to update the V8 engine to meet emissions regulations.
Mercedes-AMG is reportedly planning a surprising comeback for its V8-powered C63 sports sedan. The company is said to be dropping its recently launched smaller and more efficient engine due to slow sales. European media outlets suggest that Mercedes-AMG management is rethinking its strategy and preparing to install the 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 into the C63 as early as 2026. Despite not yet being available in Australian showrooms, the new C63 features a Formula 1-inspired 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine with electric motor boost, making 500kW of power and 1020Nm of torque. However, AMG buyers seem less enthusiastic about the four-cylinder C63 after being accustomed to V8 power for years.
Mercedes has neither confirmed nor denied the speculation from European media. However, the company has previously mentioned its plans to update the 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 to comply with the upcoming EU7 emissions regulations, ensuring its use in various models. Although the V8 engine was dropped from the C63, it continues to be utilized in other AMG models such as the S63, SL63, and G63. Nevertheless, the V8 is expected to require some form of hybrid assistance in the future to meet the new regulations. AMG recently showcased this solution with the GT 63 S E Performance, combining the 4.0-litre V8 with an electric motor to produce 620kW and 1400Nm.
It remains uncertain whether such a hybrid system can be accommodated in the smaller C63 body. However, Mercedes-AMG seems to have discovered that there is still a demand for V8 engines despite stricter emissions regulations and the growing popularity of electric vehicles.
