V8's surprise return

Mercedes-AMG is set to make a surprising change to its V8-powered C63 sports sedan, abandoning its recently introduced smaller and more fuel-efficient engine.

According to European media reports, slow sales of the new four-cylinder C63 have prompted Mercedes-AMG management to reconsider its approach and prepare for a dramatic turnaround. The company is said to be preparing to install a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine in its flagship sports sedan as early as 2026, even though the new C63 has yet to hit Australian showrooms.

The new C63 is equipped with a Formula 1-inspired 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine, which is enhanced by an electric motor to produce an impressive 500kW of power and 1020Nm of torque. However, AMG customers appear to be lukewarm about the idea of a four-cylinder C63 after years of V8 power.

While Mercedes has neither confirmed nor denied the European media speculation, the company has previously stated its intention to update the 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 to comply with the upcoming EU7 emissions regulations, ensuring that the engine can continue to be used in various models.

Although the V8 was omitted from the C63, it has remained in use in several AMG models, including the S63, SL63, and G63. However, the V8 is likely to require some form of hybrid assistance in the future to meet these new regulations. AMG recently showcased this solution with the unveiling of the GT 63 S E Performance, which combines the 4.0-liter V8 with an electric motor to generate 620kW and 1400Nm.

It remains to be seen whether such a system can be accommodated in the smaller C63 body, but it appears that Mercedes-AMG has recognized that there is still a demand for V8 engines despite stricter emissions regulations and the emergence of electric vehicles.
