V8's surprising return

Mercedes-AMG is set to make a surprising change to its V8-powered C63 sports sedan, as reports suggest that the company will abandon its smaller and more fuel-efficient engine. The decision comes as a result of slow sales of the new four-cylinder C63, prompting Mercedes-AMG management to reconsider their approach. Despite the fact that the new C63 has not yet been released in Australia, preparations are already underway to install the 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine in the sports sedan by 2026.

The latest iteration of the C63 boasts a Formula 1-inspired 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine with an electric motor boost, generating an impressive 500kW of power and 1020Nm of torque. However, potential buyers seem to be less enthusiastic about the idea of a four-cylinder C63 after being accustomed to the power of V8 engines for many years.

While Mercedes has neither confirmed nor denied the rumors, the company has previously announced its plans to update the 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine to comply with the upcoming EU7 emissions regulations. This will ensure that the engine can still be used in various models. Although the V8 engine was removed from the C63, it continues to be utilized in other AMG models such as the S63, SL63, and G63. However, to meet the new regulations, the V8 engine may require some form of hybrid assistance in the future. This solution was demonstrated in the recent unveiling of the GT 63 S E Performance, which combines the 4.0-liter V8 engine with an electric motor to produce 620kW and 1400Nm of torque.

It remains to be seen whether the smaller C63 body can accommodate such a hybrid system. Nevertheless, Mercedes-AMG has recognized that there is still a demand for V8 engines despite stricter emissions regulations and the growing popularity of electric vehicles.
