V8's surprising return

Mercedes-AMG is set to make a surprising comeback with its V8-powered C63 sports sedan. Reports from European media outlets suggest that slow sales of the new four-cylinder C63 have compelled Mercedes-AMG management to reconsider their approach and prepare for a dramatic change. It is said that the company is now preparing to install the 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 engine into its flagship sports sedan as early as 2026, even though the new C63 has not yet been released in Australian showrooms.

The current iteration of the C63 boasts a Formula 1-inspired 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine with electric motor boost, producing an impressive 500kW of power and 1020Nm of torque. Despite these specifications, AMG buyers have shown a lukewarm response to the idea of a four-cylinder C63 after being accustomed to the power of V8 engines for years.

Mercedes has neither confirmed nor denied the speculation from European media. However, the company has previously expressed its intention to update the 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 engine to comply with the upcoming EU7 emissions regulations, ensuring its usability in various models.

Although the V8 engine was removed from the C63, it continues to be utilized in several other AMG models, such as the S63, SL63, and G63. However, in order to meet the new regulations, the V8 engine is likely to require some form of hybrid assistance in the future. AMG showcased this solution with the recent introduction of the GT 63 S E Performance, which combines the 4.0-litre V8 with an electric motor, resulting in an output of 620kW and 1400Nm.

It remains to be seen whether such a hybrid system can be accommodated within the smaller C63 body. Nevertheless, Mercedes-AMG seems to have recognized that there is still a demand for V8 engines despite stricter emissions regulations and the increasing popularity of electric vehicles.
