V8's surprising return

Mercedes-AMG is set to make a surprising change to its V8-powered C63 sports sedan, abandoning its smaller and more efficient engine that was recently introduced. Reports from European media outlets indicate that slow sales of the new four-cylinder C63 have prompted Mercedes-AMG management to reconsider their approach and make a dramatic shift. According to the report, the company is now preparing to install the 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine into the sports sedan as early as 2026, even though the new C63 has not yet been released in Australian showrooms.

The latest C63 model features a Formula 1-inspired 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine with an electric motor boost, generating an impressive 500kW of power and 1020Nm of torque. Despite these specifications, AMG buyers seem to be less enthusiastic about the idea of a four-cylinder C63 after years of experiencing the power of V8 engines.

While Mercedes has not confirmed or denied the European media's speculation, the company has previously expressed its plans to update the 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine to meet the upcoming EU7 emissions regulations, ensuring its usability in various models.

Although the V8 engine was removed from the C63, it continues to be utilized in several AMG models, such as the S63, SL63, and G63. However, in order to comply with the new regulations, the V8 engine will likely require some form of hybrid assistance in the future. AMG showcased this solution with the recent unveiling of the GT 63 S E Performance, which combines the 4.0-liter V8 with an electric motor, resulting in an output of 620kW and 1400Nm.

It remains to be seen whether such a hybrid system can be integrated into the smaller C63 body, but it appears that Mercedes-AMG has recognized the ongoing demand for V8 engines despite stricter emissions regulations and the growing popularity of electric vehicles.
