Volkswagen sees a surge in electric vehicle sales

Volkswagen Group, which includes brands like Audi, Skoda, and Porsche, has achieved a significant milestone by delivering over half a million electric vehicles in the first nine months of 2023. This surge in electric vehicle sales reflects the growing trend of people switching to eco-friendly alternatives and moving away from fossil fuel cars.

The German firm is committed to achieving a net carbon-neutral balance by 2050, and their efforts in the electric vehicle market are contributing to this goal. In the nine-month period ending on September 30, electric vehicles accounted for 7.9% of Volkswagen's total deliveries, up from 6.1% in 2022.

Europe remains the key growth driver for Volkswagen Group's electric vehicles, with a remarkable 61% increase in deliveries, totaling 341,100 vehicles. In America, electric vehicle deliveries grew by 74% to reach 50,300 units.

Volkswagen led the way in electric vehicle deliveries, with 273,000 units delivered by the end of September. Audi followed with 123,000 electric vehicles, and Skoda contributed 54,400 battery-powered models. Porsche accounted for a five percent share with 27,900 electric vehicles delivered, while Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles held a four percent share with 19,600 EVs delivered.

Hildegard Wortmann, a member of Volkswagen Group's extended executive committee for sales, expressed satisfaction with their performance in the electric vehicle market. Despite some reluctance in the European market to purchase battery-powered vehicles, Volkswagen Group gained market share and remained the segment's leader. However, their order intake fell below ambitious targets due to the overall market trend being lower than expected.

The Volkswagen ID.4 emerged as the most popular model from the entire Volkswagen Group portfolio, with 162,100 vehicles sold. It was closely followed by the ID.3, which saw 90,500 deliveries. Audi's Q4 e-tron, including Sportback models, secured the third position with 77,900 examples delivered.
