Volkswagen sees significant increase in electric vehicle sales

Volkswagen Group, which includes brands like Audi, Skoda, and Porsche, has achieved a significant milestone by delivering over half a million electric vehicles in the first nine months of 2023. This surge in sales is driven by the increasing number of people opting for electric cars and moving away from fossil fuel vehicles. Volkswagen Group is committed to achieving a net carbon-neutral balance by 2050.

With the delivery of over 530,000 electric cars by the end of September, electric vehicles now account for 7.9% of Volkswagen's total deliveries, up from 6.1% in 2022. The European market has been the key growth driver, with electric vehicle deliveries increasing by 61% to 341,100 vehicles. In America, electric vehicle deliveries grew by 74% to 50,300 units.

Volkswagen led the way in electric vehicle deliveries, with 273,000 units delivered, followed by Audi with 123,000 EVs and Skoda with 54,400 battery-powered models. Porsche accounted for a five per cent share with 27,900 electric vehicles delivered, while Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles held a four per cent share with 19,600 EVs delivered.

Hildegard Wortmann, a member of Volkswagen Group's extended executive committee for sales, expressed satisfaction with the overall performance of their electric vehicle deliveries, which saw a global increase of 45% in the first nine months. Despite the current reluctance in the European market to buy battery-powered vehicles, Volkswagen Group gained market share and remained the market leader in this segment. However, their order intake fell below their ambitious targets due to the lower-than-expected overall market trend.

The Volkswagen ID.4 was the most popular model from the Volkswagen Group portfolio, with 162,100 vehicles sold. It was followed by the ID.3, which saw 90,500 deliveries. Audi's Q4 e-tron, including Sportback models, secured the third position with 77,900 examples delivered.
